De l’humain dans l’urbain

 

KAANI, or “Spice” in Wolof, is an initiative set out to give voice to the disinherited generation of young creative people from the poverty-stricken outskirts of French and West-African cities.

Our goal is to:

Take young talent, educate them and create things together, have them return home with a newfound awareness and the tools and network to enrich their own home culture.

 

As often seen in the media, suburban issues like poverty, unemployment, lack of education and social disparity frequently lead to radicalisation, criminality and global migration. With no perspectives for the future, new generations are stripped from their identity and rightful citizenship, and miss the proper means and knowledge to express their situation.

 

The empowerment of uprooted youth, in our opinion, relies on a cultural and interrelational approach. Invigorating young people’s anchorage to their local heritage stimulates pride and self-awareness, thereby laying the groundwork for initiatives aimed at the development of underprivileged regions. Subsequently, we have chosen to revolve our activities around three main pillars:

 

TO EDUCATE

We offer training packages called “Edu’KAANI Packs” to schools, institutions, prisons and the general public, where our network of artistic ambassadors (i.e. established musicians, artists and educators) teach short-term and long-term classes on Hip-Hop music & dance, street art, writing & producing, traditional urban culture & history, and much more.

TO ENABLE

Inspiring local initiatives can count on our facilitating expertise for strategic means of further development, our events and online platform for visibility and growth, and our community and network for advise and support.

TO CREATE

The untapped potential of our target environments will be unravelled when we co-create and diffuse unified works of art, music and dance, made possible by our ambassadors, our partners but essentially by our aspiring young talent, starting with Paris and Dakar. A synergy between two vastly different but single-minded cultures.
